The Giants struck quickly address one of their biggest areas of need in free agency, signing Antrel Rolle to the richest contract in NFL history for a safety.
Rolle has the starting job at free safety, and Michael Johnson, Kenny Phillips and C.C. Brown are all in the mix for the strong safety job. Rolle's addition was an important step for the back half of a secondary that was a significant weakness in 2009. That's why the Giants jumped quickly to give Rolle a five-year, $37 million deal on Friday that includes $15 million in guaranteed money. Despite there being no salary cap in place for 2010, the Giants, who are coming off of an 8-8 season, are fully determined to fix their deficiencies and improve their roster so that they can get back to being annual participants in the post season tournament.
However, don't look for them to go on a wild-spending splurge as they did last offseason.
"We'll spend where we have to spend," said general manager Jerry Reese. "I still believe you do what you do to fill the spots in your roster you need to fill. If you have to spend to do that, we'll continue to do that. We have a budget, we'll try to stick to our budget. But if we have to spend on a guy, we'll do that."
