A team coming off its best season and hoping to compete for the playoffs in one of the NFL's two toughest divisions cannot afford to make a mistake in the first round of the draft.
That's why Texans general manager Rick Smith and his scouts and coach Gary Kubiak and his assistants have been working overtime to prepare for the April 26-27 draft.
Barring trades, the Texans will enter the draft with only five selections—in the first, third, fourth, fifth and seventh rounds. Because of trades for quarterback Matt Schaub and center Chris Myers, they don't have second- and sixth-round picks.
The scouting process continued once Smith and Kubiak returned from the NFL spring meetings.
