Bears Team Report (Yahoo! Sports)
User Rating: / 0
Tuesday, 07 September 2010

Despite a preseason that had him running for his life or ducking for cover far too often, Bears quarterback Jay Cutler can't wait for the regular season to begin.

That might seem odd, considering the Bears scored just 17 points in the five quarters that Cutler had played going into the final preseason game, during which he was sacked 10 times, threw two interceptions and compiled a passer rating of 62.4.

Questions about the reworked offensive line's ability to protect Cutler have not been answered to anyone's satisfaction, although the quarterback and offensive coordinator Mike Martz both insist there has been improvement. The other huge question was how quickly the offense would fully grasp Martz's thick playbook.

Chicago Bears The biggest problem remains a revamped offensive line that lacks NFL experience at their positions. Only C Olin Kreutz is playing where he played last opening day. LT Chris Williams has five starts at his spot, LG Roberto Garza hasn't played the left side since '05, RG Lance Louis never has played in a regular-season game and RT Frank Omiyale hasn't played that position in the NFL. The line has struggled in pass protection, although Louis and Omiyale have shown flashes of being effective run blockers.

Reason for concerns: NFC North (SportingNews.com)

Friday, 03 September 2010
A capsule look at reasons for concern among teams in the NFC North: Chicago Bears 1. Offensive line. Poor line play could prevent coordinator Mike Martz's offense from taking hold. QB Jay Cutler has been sacked 10 times, leading to only 14 first-team points in 16 possessions. Breakdowns have come largely at both tackle spots, but the Bears must rely on inexperienced Chris Williams and Frank Omiyale because backup Kevin Shaffer offers only a short-term replacement possibility.
